She flew so high she was nearly invisible. Above 70,000 feet — beyond the reach of Soviet interceptors and anti-aircraft fire— the U-2 gathered intelligence that shaped the Cold War. Designed by Kelly Johnson at Lockheed's legendary, secretive "Skunk Works," she was unlike anything the world had ever seen.
The name "Dragon Lady" was assigned by the U.S. Air Force in 1957 — borrowed from the mysterious, unconquerable character in Milton Caniff's classic comic strip Terry and the Pirates. The parallel was fitting. She was difficult. She was demanding. She didn't forgive mistakes. Pilots call landing her "wrestling the Dragon Lady" — full-body inputs, cable-driven controls, no fly-by-wire assist, a plane that simply does not want to come back down to earth.
And yet she delivered. U-2 flights revealed that Soviet bomber production was far less threatening than feared, and their long-range missile capabilities were largely overstated — intelligence that helped President Eisenhower resist a catastrophic arms escalation. Then, in October 1962, a U-2 photographed Soviet missile sites being assembled in Cuba — intelligence that triggered the Cuban Missile Crisis.
She has never stopped flying. Though targeted for retirement, the Dragon Lady continues to be a uniquely capable platform — flying high and lingering long, collecting intelligence no other aircraft can gather.
This pint glass honors her legacy — the most storied reconnaissance aircraft in American history. Every time you pour a cold one, you're raising a glass to the pilots who flew alone, in silence, at the edge of space, and brought back intelligence that changed the world.
This is part of our aviation tribute glassware collection. If you're collecting pieces that honor the aircraft and aviators who wrote history, this belongs on your shelf next to the Lt. Col. Lamb, Lt. Col. Stewart, and Memphis Belle glasses.
16 oz shaker pint glass. Hand-wash only, not microwave safe. Each glass is handmade, so slight variations in the glass are part of the craft.
